The Undertaker/Lesnar Summerslam Controversy

What do you make of that? There is a controversy over the finish of the Summerslam main event. It was scripted, but it is still getting talked about. Lesnar had Undertaker in his submission. The ref was out of place to see whether Taker would tap. The timekeeper saw Taker tap and rang the bell, giving Lesnar the win. The ref explained that he did not call for the bell. Taker takes advantage with a low blow and locks in Hell's Gate. Lesnar passes out and Taker gets the win.

That was a stupid finish. When has it ever happened that the timekeeper just ends a match because he sees someone tap or get pinned? I can't even remember a legitimate botch happening where the timekeeper prematurely rang the bell before the ref called for it. Not saying it never happens, but I cannot recall it. If you want to do controversy, that's one thing. There are some controversial angles that are just stupid. What the WWE did just makes the timekeeper look clumsy. You are creating a controversial angle based on clumsiness. That isn't intriguing.

Let me bring up another Undertaker match. There was once a match between Taker and Kurt Angle where Angle had Taker in a submission. Taker managed to turn it into a pinning predicament, but he tapped out at the same time Angle had his shoulder down for the 3. That was a controversial ending that didn't come off as clumsy. That was an interesting finish.

I would have rather this match end in a more decisive way, but if the WWE had to have shenanigans, why not just have interference? People talked about Kane interfering. If he was not available, how about having Paul Heyman accidentally distract Lesnar to set up the finish? Lame? But is it as bad as having the absurd finish that they did go with? Maybe it isn't as controversial, but it would be less stupid.

Should this be seen as an Undertaker heel turn? Unless the WWE runs an angle where Taker possessed the timekeeper to ring the bell, I don't see how Taker is responsible for what went down. He just took advantage with his new favorite move, the low blow. There have been some faces that can use low blows and still get cheered. Ric Flair comes to mind. He is a charismatic legend. If the WWE did want to go the route of Taker going heel, they aren't making him look like a great one. He just looks like a guy that took advantage of a stupid mistake.

Where do they go from here? If they had a decisive finish, Taker and Lesnar could just go their separate ways. The way the match did end, you just feel like they need to do it again. But they might not. There are rumors again of Sting showing up. Time for Taker vs. Sting? If Taker and Lesnar do face each other one more time, the main problem with that is that it takes away from other feuds Taker could be having. The Undertaker's career is coming to an end. His best days are behind him. Why waste so many of his final matches with a guy he faced a few times already over 10 years ago? And yet, if they don't continue the feud, I would just feel like it got a poor finish.
